STUDENT LIFE AND BELONGING
Service As Action Week - May 20 - 23
This year, the Belonging & Outreach student leaders, in partnership with Lily C (‘26) and alumni Sam W (‘24), have chosen the theme of AccessAbility as our focus for SAA week.
National AccessAbility week in Canada is May 26-30 and focuses on disability awareness, activism and education. We will be observing it from May 20 - May 23.
For our SAA week, we will be highlighting several partnerships that The York School community has with organizations that provide inclusive and accessible programming to disabled communities within the GTA - DramaWay, The Beverley School, Holland Bloorview, and Special Olympics - to name a few.
Students and staff can look forward to activities throughout the week that highlight the importance of providing accessible programming and opportunities for all members of our city.
On Tuesday and Wednesday at lunch, there will be a service learning fair in the cafeteria for students in Grades 8-11 to learn more about volunteer opportunities with local organizations. At this time, students will also be able to sign up for their Fall service placements.
On Wednesday, May 21 we will also have a red shirt casual dress day to demonstrate solidarity and support of disability awareness and accessibility. #RedforAccessAbility
All week, we will be supporting the Packing a Smile organization by running a toy drive (new toy donations only please) to be delivered to children in hospital and rehabilitation programs throughout the GTA. As well, we will be encouraging students and staff to engage in our house competition coin drive, with funds raised to support Holland Bloorview’s life skills program for disabled youth.
