Lunch Outs

  • The next optional Grade 6 lunch out will be on Monday, May 6.

  • The next optional Grade 7 lunch out will be on Thursday, May 16

  •  Homeroom teachers will review the boundaries and rules with students.

  • Grade 8’s will continue to have an optional lunch every Friday.

Challenge Week - May 6 - 10

  • All middle schoolers and the teaching staff will be embarking on exciting curriculum based trips to Ottawa (g6), Quebec City (g7), and Montreal (g8).

Grade 8 Reach Ahead Math Class Placement Test - May 13, 4:00pm - 5:00pm

Stage Combat workshop for Grade 8 Drama Students - May 13

  • Members of the drama class will be participating in an afternoon workshop in the drama room with stage combat instructors from Rapier's Witt. 

  • To be prepared, they should wear their gym clothes and bring water".

Festival of Trees Celebration at Toronto Harbourfront Centre - May 15

  • The Festival of Trees is a celebration of reading in which the winner of Canadian books nominated across different categories will be announced. There are author-led workshops, book signings, and many fun activities.

  • The students on this trip have elected to participate in the Forest of Reading and are avid readers. The Festival of Trees is the largest literary event for young readers in Canada and is like a rock concert for readers.

  • This is their chance to connect with the authors of the books they have read, meet other avid readers and celebrate their participation in the Forest of Reading program.

Fire Drill - May 21

  • There will be a practice fire drill for students on Tuesday, May 21. 

  • If your child needs extra support during the drill, please reach out to your child’s homeroom teacher.

Gauss Contest - May 23

  • On Thursday, May 23, from 8:30am - 9:30am our Grade 7 & 8 students and Grade 6s that volunteered will write the Gauss contest organized by the  University of Waterloo's Center for Education in Mathematics and Computing (CEMC). 

  • The Gauss contests introduce students to a broader perspective of mathematics in a fun, accessible way. Intriguing problems and a multiple-choice format make the Gauss contests a wonderful opportunity for all participants to grow their interest in and get curious about the power of math.

  • Preparation is not required, but students who want to know what to expect or try a past contest can find them here.

Athletics Breakfast of Champions - May 28, 7:15am - 8:20am - Save the Date

  • Student athletes and their parents are invited to a breakfast in the school cafe to celebrate their season. The school will recognize students who participated in the athletic program with  special awards

TPH Vaccination Clinic at The York School - May 28

  • Toronto Public Health (TPH) will be hosting a follow up School Immunization Program (SIP) clinic at The York School on Tuesday, May 28, 2024. The clinic will offer second (and final) vaccines for hepatitis b, human papillomavirus (HPV) to grade 7 students and any grade 8 student who still need their second immunization.

Middle School Science Fair - May 30 - Save the Date 

  • Please mark your calendars for the morning of Thursday May 30 (9:00am - 10:00am).  

  • All grade 8s will be sharing their learning with a science-fair style exhibition in the cafeteria of The York School.  Families are invited to attend. 

  • If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact your child’s teacher, Ms. Walker (8A) Ms. Rowell (8B), Mr Tan (8C).

Breakfast of Champions

Celebrating Athletics is a daily goal at TYS. Our year end Breakfast of Champions will take place on May 27 for the Senior School and May 28, 2024 for the Middle School from 7:30am to 8:20am. All athletes on teams are welcome and can sign up in the link below.

The York School Parents’ Association (YPA) is looking for volunteers to fill the Class Parent and specialized committee positions for the upcoming year. Becoming a YPA volunteer is a great way to connect with other parents and participate in activities that contribute to building our wonderful York School community.

We are looking for volunteers for 2024 - 2025 school year in the following positions:

  • Class Parents

  • Preloved Uniform Committee

  • Parent Connects (monthly Book Club and Coffee Socials)

The deadline to respond is May 23, 2024 at 4:00pm.

Student Life & Belonging

Service As Action Week - Tuesday May 21 - Thursday 24

This year for Service as Action week the York School will be supporting Campfire Circle. 

Campfire circle (formally Camp Oochigeas) is a privately funded charity that helps to support kids affected by childhood cancer and severe illness. They offer year round, community and in hospital programs, as well as an overnight summer camp. 

The York School is hoping to raise $5000 which would send a child to camp for two weeks. 

Donations can be made

  • Using our school fundraising page 

  • Participating in the week-long coin drive/house challenge out front of the Student Life & Belonging office

  • Purchasing a Taylor Swift friendship bracelet at lunch or before school in the cafeteria each day

  • Purchasing items at the bake sale on Thursday, May 23 in the morning and at lunch

There will  also be a variety of camp-themed activities all week including a Camp Swag Casual Day on Friday, May 24.

All funds raised will go to Campfire Circle to help us reach our goal.

New Circles Reusable Bag Drive - Monday, May 13 - Friday, May 17

New Circles is in need of reusable bags for their clients when shopping at the store. A reminder that New Circles provides dignified shopping experiences to newcomers to Canada and has been a long-standing  partner of The York School.

Students can bring the reusable bags and place them in the house bins outside the Student Life & Belonging office upon return from Challenge Week. Thank you to Robbie K and Ridley K for this initiative!

Volunteers Needed!
Junior School Carnival - Saturday, June 8 3:00pm - 6:00pm

Any students in Grades 7-11 who would like to volunteer with our Junior Schoo Carnival are encouraged to sign up using the form sent by Natasha Estey.

Senior students can earn service hours towards their 40 required hours for graduation at this event.
