BEYOND YORK - January 11, 2024

It’s hard to believe but grade 12 students have 5 months left of school! Time will take on new meaning until then - at times flying by and at other times creeping along. Paying attention to deadlines has been, and continues to be, very important. The following reminders have been shared with the grade 12s.

Reminders:

#1 Applications to OUAC are due January 15. If you are considering adding another choice, please do that this week.

All Canadian applications need to be submitted by January 15.

#2 UK applications are due January 31.

#3 You MUST update Naviance. Log in and see that every school you applied to is listed. This is important - we only send your grades (outside of Ontario) to the schools you list on your Naviance page. And... let us know when you receive a result and indicate that result on Naviance!

#4 Please know what supplements you must complete for each university (if any) and when each is due. Again, you can refer to this spreadsheet, but it is best that you read the due dates on the individual university portals you made for each university you applied to.

#5 Make sure you create accounts with the universities you applied to.

Course Selection Forms have been emailed to current grade 8, 9, and 10 students and their families. In the upcoming week, students will receive more information about the available choices for their grade. We request that the form is returned with signatures from both the student and parent by Tuesday, February 20, 2024. Please carefully review the attachments in the provided emails, and if you have any questions, feel free to contact your child’s counselor.

For grade 10 students selecting their IB Diploma courses, information about options has been shared over the past couple of months. As part of their career assignment, students are required to schedule a meeting with their counselor. Parents are welcome to arrange meetings with their child’s counselor to discuss course selections and university-related matters.

Grades 9, 10 & 11: Do what you love! Follow your heart! Let your passion guide you! Sounds amazing, right? We all want to wake up each morning feeling inspired and excited to learn. So, as a high school student, how do you decide what you truly enjoy–and then choose a university program that matches your interests AND prepares you to one day earn, you know… money?!

The University of Waterloo has some great resources to help you, no matter what university you may be interested in. Click HERE to explore more.

Innomasters is a program organized and run by the University of Toronto’s Engineers Without Borders (EWB) Chapter, that aims to help youth develop engineering problem-solving skills that can be applied to address societal challenges. Our goal is to inspire students in the GTA to develop sustainable solutions to some of the challenges involving 2 of the UNICEF Sustainable Development Goals:

  • Clean Water and Sanitation

  • Affordable and Clean Energy

Innomasters is a semester-long mentorship initiative where bi-weekly workshops are hosted at the University of Toronto to teach students about the engineering design process and how it can be applied to transform opportunities into solutions.

Throughout these workshops, high school students will simultaneously work on their projects and learn new elements of the engineering design process to implement into their projects. Students from each school will be placed in teams of 4-6 and will have the opportunity to work with individuals from other high schools to address a problem in our world today. Each team will be led by an engineering mentor who will assist and guide them through solving their problem. Each team will be given the opportunity to present their solution in a final showcase to a panel of judges in April 2024. The Design Showcase would offer students a chance to showcase their project to their peers, friends, family, and other guests from UofT! Click HERE to learn more.
