MESSAGE FROM STRUAN ROBERTSON, HEAD OF SCHOOL

Athletics

Mid-season form. This is a term used in sport that refers to being “the best version of yourself or a team” early in the season – and that is exactly what The York Storm is doing.

Last week, our Varsity Boys Volleyball team had its best finish ever at the pre-season Marauder Cup at McMaster. This past weekend, we hosted an amazing basketball clinic with NBA skills coach David Nurse for the 10th year, and our Co-Ed X-Country team enjoyed an amazing day competing in the Harrier Classic at Trinity College (reppin’ the new tent). We are in full swing and multiple teams start their season next week.

One standard of any outstanding athletic program is its ability to fuel and celebrate its athletes on the daily! This year, we once again have unique bracelets and we’ve added new stickers that our coaches can use to celebrate our athletes any time they wish. I’ve given out 11 already! The stickers recognize three types of athletes. “Effort Energizers” are athletes who simply bring a passion for sport every day. “Mindset Motivators” impact their teammates with their relentless drive to learn and improve. “Character Champions” practice and play with kindness, gratitude and respect. Daily Celebrations = Everyday Passion.

Our program is world-class, top to bottom, and our students benefit from great teachers and community coaching gems. I want to take a moment to showcase the community coaches at the York School this term:

Octavian Ghidanac via North Toronto Soccer - U10 Co-Ed Soccer
Faris Burhan via Moredale Soccer - U11 Co-Ed Soccer
Ben White via TMU Varsity Basketball - Varsity and U11 Girls Basketball
Raysean Joseph via TMU Varsity Basketball - U12 Girls Basketball
Moses Aidoo via U of T Track and Field - U12/U14 Co-ed XCountry
Thalia Wright via Under Armour Flag Football - Grade 3-5 Flag Football
Coach Abe Shah via U of T Flag Football - Varsity Boys Flag Football
Matthew Perovic via Cherry Beach SC - Varsity Boys  Soccer

Lastly, mindset is widely recognized as a skill that can be developed, and one of the leaders in this field is Jim Kwik. Every once in a while, I will include some inspiration and education in my message. Have a look at this video featuring Jim Kwik and Emmanuel Acho titled Don’t let your goals hold you back:
Don't Let your Goals Hold you Back

The start of the year has been amazing! I know we will keep going!
